Even many things are mechanized, there is still a morning market every day.

Therefore, her day starts very early.

She wakes up at 3 am and quickly finishes housework including cleaning, laundry and prep for breakfast, and then she goes to morning market. After selling pickles until 11:30, she starts to prepare for morning market of next day when she gets home.

After packing goods around evening, her long day finishes.

I take my hat off to her for hard work more than I expected.

Ms. Hirata said “There are some farmers harvesting tomatoes and spinach in the winter. But we do it in traditional way and start working from spring. The rape blossoms and wild veggies taste good in spring. Because I am busy for rice-planting and cannot take care of field much, I often use wild vegetables to pickle.”

Salted vegetables, which are the blessing of mountain in spring, are simple and the best.

“The rape blossoms, mountain aralia cordata, bracken, turnip and also this one are popular to eat around here.” She especially recommended them and gave us a dish to try.

The crispy texture was followed by the smell of mountain, and the little sourness left on my tongue was good and refreshing too.

“There was no roof like this and paved road here at that time. We sold veggies on a matting on the ground. Because there was no boundary, people scrambled for the best position. Fresh eggs just-harvested in the morning were sold in a can covered by chaff and rice bran. Everything was changed compared to that time. But it is still really fun to have a chat with customers face to face when products are sold.” Ms. Hirata said.
